COMMERCAIL ITEM DESCRIPTION

LABEL, PAPER, GUMMED (IN BOOK FORM)

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification UU-L-49, Class B.

This Commercial Item Description covers non-removable gummed paper labels with water- activated adhesive intended for general purpose labeling.

1. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS

A. Paper: The labels shall be made of chemical woodpulp which may contain a maximum of 25 percent unbleached or groundwood. The paper shall have a basis weight (before gumming) of 66.6 to 85.8 g/m²

(45 to 58 lbs. 25 X 38-500) -5%, + unlimited, when tested in accordance with TAPPI test method T410. The paper shall be uniform in texture with a smoothly finished surface and shall be sized so that the inked impressions from typewriter ribbons, ball point pens, and drawing ink will be well defined and will not feather or spread.

B. Construction: The labels shall be furnished in sheets bound into books. The books shall have a front and back cover and be bound such that the sheets of labels do not fall out. There shall be 12 labels per sheet. Labels shall be perforated on all adjoining sides for easy separation. There shall be 20 sheets of labels per book.

C. Borders: The labels shall have a 3.17mm (1/8 inch) wide red border printed on the ungummed side. The red borders shall be uniform in width and color. A dimensional tolerance of + 1.58 mm (+ 1/16 inch) shall be allowed for the borders.

D. Gum adhesive: The labels shall be completely coated on one side with a uniform film of gum adhesive. The gum adhesive shall be quickly water activated and adhere immediately to paper, wood, fiberboard and glass except silicone treated glass. The gum adhesive shall be non – toxic and not have an obnoxious taste or odor.
