COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
STENCIL, DUPLICATING MACHINE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description, for all Federal Agencies.
1. Scope. This description covers paper stencils for use as masters in reproduction, on mimeograph duplicating machines.
2. Salient characteristics:
2.1 The stencil paper size, as expressed by overall dimensions of the backing sheet, shall be 216 x 362 mm (8-1/2 x 14-1/4 inches) or 216 x 457 mm (8-1/2 x 18 inches) (+/- 1.6 mm (1/16 inch)), as specified (See Ordering Data).
2.2 The stencil paper shall be a fibrous tissue treated with wet strength resins and coated with a blue stencil forming material. The stencil paper shall have an average dry tensile strength in each direction of 50 g/mm (2.8 pounds/inch) width, minimum, when tested in accordance with TAPPI T 404. The stencil paper shall have an average elongation of 5 percent maximum, when tested in accordance with TAPPI T 457. The backing sheet shall have an average basis weight of 89 g/m2 (60 pounds (25 x 38-500)), minimum, when tested in accordance with TAPPI T 410. The cushioning sheet may be coated or impregnated at the supplier’s option. When specified, stencils shall have a top film of flexible plastic which shall permit cutting of the stencil and shall be transparent to the extent that stenciled characters are clearly visible.
2.3 Each sheet of stencil paper shall be secured to a backing sheet which is perforated across its width such that a paper stub remains attached to the stencil paper when the body of the backing sheet is removed. The top of the stub shall contain four holes, suitably spaced, for holding the stub in the duplicating machine. The stencil paper shall remain firmly attached to the stub during the duplicating process. The top film, when specified, shall be adhered to the stub portion of the backing sheet such that the film remains in place during cutting of the stencil but shall be easily removed without fiber displacement when the stencil is to be mounted on the duplicating machine. The film shall extend at least 6.35 mm (1/4inch) beyond the lowest horizontal guideline:
