Master duplicating paper shall be white and shall be coated on both sides. The coating shall be uniform and free from mottle and any particles which will pick or lift during normal use. The master paper shall lie flat with no tendency to curl. Master paper shall not be affected by the duplicating fluid to such an extent that it interferes with satisfactory performance. Grain direction of the master duplicating paper shall parallel the glue line joining master and carbon together.
B. Protective sheet. The protective sheet shall be suitable for preventing transfer of carbon substrate and the master sheet.
C. Carbon paper. Paper used for base paper stock shall consist of bleached chemical wood, groundwood, or a similar, or a similar base stock. Basis weight of the paper stock shall be not less than 51 g/m2 (35 lbs (25 x 38-500) ) when tested in accordance with TAPPI T 410. The base paper stock shall be coated with suitable waxes, dyes, and other necessary ingredients to ensure the quality and performance requirements. The carbon-coated side of the sheet shall be overcoated with a protective film which shall prevent the carbon surface from crystallizing, shall seal in the dye, and shall prevent smearing, smudging, soiling the hands, or discoloration of the master paper. Edges shall be sealed with a protective material to destroy permanently the aniline dyes. The carbon paper shall have a smooth a calendered finish and shall give perfect release of the dye coating from the paper when impressed by type face, stylus or other means of transfer.
D. Paper set. Paper sets shall be the width specified, with a tolerance of +/- 1.6 mm (1/16 inch).
The master sheet shall be the length specified ( See Section 6 ), with a tolerance of +/- 3.2mm (1/8 inch ) , plus a margin of 12.7 mm ( ½ inch) maximum for clamping the sheet in the reproduction equipment. The specified size shall indicate the reproduction area of the master sheet.
The master sheet shall be perforated across its width 12.7 +/- 3.2 mm (1/2 +/- 1/8 inch) from the top edge and the carbon sheer shall be glued to the stub formed by the perforations and the top edge of master sheet. The carbon paper shall be positioned with the carbon coating facing the master sheet and shall have an uncoated margin along the bottom edge which shall extend beyond bottom of master. The protective sheet shall be loosely inserted between the carbon and master sheet, shall cover the entire area of the master, and shall have a margin at the bottom to grip for removal.
