length and 0.014 ± 0.002 inch in thickness. The fastener prongs shall be 1-1/2 (one inch capacity) or 2-1/2 inch (two inch capacity) inches ± 1/16 inch respectively in length; and, 7/32 ± 1/32 inch in width. The fastener shall be able to accommodate paper 2-hole punched, which has hole centers 2-3/4 ± 1/16 inches apart.
3.5.1.2) The fastener shall be fabricated from one continuous piece of steel with no bends or cuts except for the taper at the ends. prongs are to be between .213ϳ” and .220” wide, between .011 ” and .01ϱ” thick and must have a 1ϱT Rockwell hardness of F 1 to F ϱ. The fastener shall be manufactured with the grain of the steel in the long direction of the fastener. For 1” Capacity, the prong will be at least 1” and for 2” Capacity, the prong will be at least 2” long, +/- 1/16 inch respectively in length and 7 /32, +/- 1/32 inch in width. The fastener shall be able to accommodate paper 2-hole punched, which has hole centers 2-3/4 +/- 1/16 inches apart.
The fasteners shall be finished with a commercially acceptable corrosion resistant material that complies with the lead content on surface coating specified in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of
2008, H.R. 4040, Title I, section 101, paragraph, Specification 90ppm maximum; and shall pass the bending and corrosion resistance tests of paragraphs 4.4.4 and 4.4.5. The fasteners shall be free from burrs and sharp edges, and have tapered ends. Folders shall be assembled with the prongs extendedand flattened down for safe handling and to minimize bulk. Fasteners shall be perforated (see 3.5.1) or bonded type (3.5.2); at the option of the contractor, unless otherwise specified (see 6.2).
3.5.1 Perforated Type Fasteners. For perforation type fasteners, the base (the area between the prongs) shall be 2-5/8 ± 1/16 inches in length and 9/16 ± 1/16 inch in width. The base shall have one or more reinforcing ribs. The fastener shall be attached to the folder by eight or more projections of the base so that a minimum of projection exists. The paperboard or paper shall be indented during the perforation process so that upon insertions, the back of the fastener is flush with the surrounding pressboard or paper.
3.5.2 Bonded Type Fasteners Bonded type fasteners shall comply with one of the following two methods:
3.5.2.1) The nonwoven fabric base shall be 3-3/4 ± 1/16 inches in length and 1 inch +/- 1/16 inches in width. The finished steel shall be one continuous piece of steel with no bends or cuts except for the taper at the ends and shall be centered lengthwise on, and bonded to, a nonwoven fabric. The fastener shall be manufactured with the grain of the steel in the long direction of the fastener. The nonwoven fabric shall allow the fastener to be bent in order to accommodate two-hole punched paper, which has hole centers 2-3/4 ± 1/16 inch apart. The fabric shall have an Elmendorf tear resistance of 550 grams, minimum, in each direction and
shall be 0.012 inch to 0.015 inch in thickness. The nonwoven fabric shall be bonded to the folder
