COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
FOLDER, FILE; AND FOLDER, FILE, HANGING
The General Services Administration has authorized the use
of this commercial item description by all federal agencies.
1. Scope: This description covers file folders and hanging file folders
made from 0.28 mm thick (11 point) paperboard of various colors, without
fasteners.
2. Classification: Folders shall be of the following types, styles,
sizes and colors.
Type I – Folder, File
Type II – Folder, File, Hanging
Style A – Straight Cut, Self Tab
Style B – Double Top, Straight Cut, Self Tab
Style C – 1/2 Cut, Self Tab
Style D – Double Top, 1/2 Cut, Self Tab
Style E – 1/3 Cut, Self Tab
Style F – Double top, 1/3 Cut, Self Tab
Style G – 1/5 Cut, Self Tab
Style H – Double Top, 1/5 Cut, Self Tab
Style I – Hanging File Folder with Slotted Top for Insertable Tabs.
Type I is available in Styles A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H.
Type II is available only in Style I.
Size 1 – Letter Size
Size 2 – Legal Size
3. Salient Characteristics.
3.1 Construction. File folders and hanging file folders shall be made
from paper board conforming to the requirements of Table I. When necessary to
achieve the specified color, the paperboard shall be dyed or tinted. Tabs on
type I, file folders shall be an extension of the back leaf.
3.1.1 When a double top is specified, (Styles B, D, F, H), the tab and the top
of the folder shall be made from 2 sheets of paperboard conforming to the
requirements of Table I that are of the specified color and are securely glued
together. The reinforcing material shall be the same stock as the folder and
shall be 28.5 mm ± 2 mm (1 1/8 ± 1/16 in.) on total width, including the tab and
measured from the edge of the tab, extending the full length of the folder
edge. The reinforcement shall be securely glued to the inner portion of the
folder back leaf.
