3.1.2 The top corners of the folder and the ends of the tabs
shall be rounded on Type I, file folders. Rounded corners may include “S”
curves.
3.1.3 Type I File Folders: The lines shall be embossed across the entire
width of the front leaf, parallel to the fold. Either 2 lines at 10 mm (3/8
inch) intervals with the first line 10 mm from the fold, of 3 lines at 6 mm
(1/4 inch) intervals with the first line 6 mm (1/4 inch) from the fold are
acceptable. On type II hanging file folders, 4 lines shall be embossed across
the entire width of each leaf, 6 mm (1/4 inch) apart, parallel to the fold,
beginning 6 mm (1/4 inch) from the fold. In addition, each leaf of type II,
hanging file folders shall have 1 line embossed across the entire width of the
leaf 152 ± 2 mm (6 ± 1/16 inches) from the fold, parallel to the fold.
3.1.4 When specified, an insertable tab shall be furnished with each type II
hanging file folder. Tabs shall be made from clear, flexible, plastic and shall
include blank white paper inserts with enough space for 3 lines of type. Tabs
shall be uniformly cut and free from dirt, rips, scratches, blisters,
discoloration, or any other defects which may affect their durability,
appearance, or serviceability. Third cut tabs shall be 89 ± 3 mm (3-1/2 ± 1/8
inches) long: fifth cut tabs shall be 51 mm ± 3 mm (2 ± 1/8 inches) long.
3.1.5 Type II Hanging File Folders: shall have tab attaching slots
centrally located along the top of each leaf. Size 1 folders shall have 11
slots located at 26 mm center to center along the middle 260 mm (10/1-4 inches)
of the upper edge of each leaf. Size 2 folders shall have 13 slots located 26
mm center to center along the middle 312 mm (12-1/4 inches) of the upper edge
of each leaf. Slots shall accept the third cut and the fifth cut Insertable
tabs specified above.
3.1.6 Type II Hanging File Folders: shall have metal hangers attached to
each leaf so that the folders can be suspended on rails inside file drawers.
Each end of the hanger shall be shaped to form a book. Hook design shall be in
accordance with Figure I, below. The overall length of the hangers shall be not
less than 318 mm (12-1/2 inches) for Size 1 file folders and or not less than 394
mm (15-1/2 inches) for size 2 file folders. The outer portion of the hooks,
which does not rest on the rails, may be curved. Point or sharp edges on the
hangers shall be eliminated by chamfering, filleting, grinding or other means.
Hooks shall be coated with an organic compound or polymer, such as nylon to
reduce friction so that the folders an slide easily along the rails, Type II
folders shall pass the Hanger Test specified below in Section 2., QUALITY
ASSURANCE.
3.2 Dimensions.
3.2.1 Type I File Folders: The horizontal length of the front and back
leaves shall be 298 mm ± 2 mm ( 11-3/4 inches ± 1/16 inches) for Size 1 folders
and 375 mm ± 2 mm (14-3/4 ± 1/16 inches) for Size 2 folders. The height of the
back leaf shall be 234.9 mm (9 1/2 in) (including the tab) and the height of
the front leaf measured from the fold shall be 225.4 mm (8 7/8 in).
3.2.2 Type II Hanging File Folders: The horizontal length of the front
and back leaves shall be 298 mm ± 2 mm (11-3/4 inches ± 1/16 inches) for Size 1
folders and 375 mm ± 2 mm (14-3/4 ± 1/16 inches) for Size 2 folders. The
vertical length of the front and back leaves shall 237 mm 14-3/4 ± 1/16
inches). Hangers shall be made from metal not less than 0.64 mm (0.025 inch)
thick.
